Shaving the Cocos
February through March signal the time for shaving of the Coconut Palms (Cocos). This involves climbing the trees using metal clamping bands. The old method was to climb the cocos using climbing spikes. The band climbing is better for the trees and much safer for the climber.

Why do we do this? The palms develop large pods of coconuts, blooms and seed pods, as well as shedding fronds. Falling coconuts are no laughing matter. Falling from the height of a mature palm tree makes a coconut a potentially deadly piece of fruit. The same can be said for the dead fronds as they plummet to the ground.

How often do we do this? As mentioned, the late wintertime typically signals the time to remove this unwanted growth before the nuts are mature and become more difficult to cut. It is also typical to do this in the early fall. So, twice a year for most years. This cost is computed into the landscaping budget each year by the Board.

Question: How many kinds of palms are growing on the grounds at Kalanikai?

Wasteline Relining Project is Complete
On Monday, March 8th NuFlow South Pacific, LLC completed the last of the waste line relining project at Kalanikai. This was done utilizing a multi-year contract agreement which allowed the association to get the project done without special assessments. A big thankyou to Joe and his crew who consistently performed in a very professional way.

While this process is not a cheap one, it is an exceptionally long lasting one. We should never have to address leakage of this sort in the future, short of some unforeseen natural event.

Also a big thankyou to RM Jeremy who kept things rolling downhill during the entire project over both years.
